SPLOST VOTE ON TUESDAY (NOV 5)

This is a reminder that Chatham County voters tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 5) will consider renewing the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for a six-year period beginning October 2014. SPLOST is a 1% sales tax on most retail goods in Chatham County. Revenue by law can only fund certain kinds of constructions costs, and all spending is subjected to an independent audit. 

The proposed SPLOST would generate an estimated $370 million to fund projects in Chatham County, Savannah, Bloomingdale, Garden City, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Thunderbolt, Tybee Island, and Vernonburg. Among the highlights, the proposed SPLOST 6 would allocate:  

- Up to $120 million for a new arena

- $56.3 million for road and sidewalk projects

- $48.5 million for public safety facilities and equipment

- $38.2 million for cultural and recreation facilities

- $33 million for drainage projects

- Up to $30 million for an industrial park

- $13.5 million for community centers

- $7 million for Tybee Beach renourishment

- $5 million for libraries

- $1 million to begin rebuilding and re-landscaping the Victory Drive medians
